Cormorants Of Vietnam – Phalacrocoracidae
Phalacrocoracidae is a family of waterbirds that includes cormorants and shags. There are several species cormorants of Vietnam that can be found, including the little cormorant, great cormorant, and Indian cormorant.
Little Cormorant: The little cormorant (Microcarbo niger) is a small cormorant that is found across much of Asia, including Vietnam. They are usually seen near freshwater sources such as lakes, rivers, and wetlands. They have a glossy black plumage with a small patch of white on the throat. Their eyes are green, and they have a short, hooked bill. They are social birds and can be found in large flocks during the non-breeding season. They feed mainly on fish and small aquatic animals.

Great Cormorant: The great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) is a large and widespread cormorant that can be found in many parts of the world, including Vietnam. They are usually found near large bodies of water such as lakes, rivers, and coastal areas. They have a glossy black plumage, a yellow throat patch, and a long, hooked bill. They are powerful swimmers and can dive to depths of up to 45 meters to catch fish. They are also known to form large communal roosts during the non-breeding season.

Indian Cormorant: The Indian cormorant (Phalacrocorax fuscicollis) is a medium-sized cormorant that is found in South Asia, including Vietnam. They are usually found near wetlands and freshwater sources. They have a glossy black plumage with a white patch on the thigh, and a long, curved bill. They are social birds and can often be seen roosting and nesting in colonies. They feed mainly on fish and other aquatic animals and are known for their high-pitched calls.

All three species of cormorants play an important role in the ecosystem, as they are top predators of fish and other aquatic animals. However, they can also have negative impacts on fisheries if their populations are not well-managed. In Vietnam, these birds are generally not considered to be threatened, but habitat loss and degradation, as well as hunting and fishing practices, may pose threats to their populations in the future.
