Frigatebirds Of Vietnam – Fregatidae
Frigatebirds are a family of seabirds known for their distinctive appearance, with long wings and a forked tail. There are three species of Frigatebirds of Vietnam: the Lesser Frigatebird, the Christmas Island Frigatebird, and the Great Frigatebird. Here is a closer look at these fascinating birds.
- Lesser Frigatebird:
The Lesser Frigatebird is the smallest of the frigatebirds, with a wingspan of around 6 feet. It is also known as the “man-o’-war bird” due to its habit of stealing food from other seabirds. The male Lesser Frigatebird is easily identifiable by its red throat pouch, which it inflates to attract a mate during breeding season. These birds can be found year-round in the tropical waters off the coast of Vietnam, with a particular concentration around the Con Dao islands.
- Christmas Island Frigatebird:
The Christmas Island Frigatebird is a larger species of frigatebird, with a wingspan of up to 8 feet. They are easily identifiable by their long, slender wings and deeply forked tails. During breeding season, the male Christmas Island Frigatebird has a bright red gular pouch, which it inflates to attract a mate. The Christmas Island Frigatebird is a migratory bird, spending the winter months in the Indian Ocean before returning to Christmas Island to breed. While they are not a common sight in Vietnam, they can occasionally be spotted during their migration.
- Great Frigatebird:
The Great Frigatebird is the largest of the frigatebirds, with a wingspan of up to 8.5 feet. It is also the most widespread, found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world. The male Great Frigatebird has a red gular pouch that he inflates during breeding season to attract a mate. The female Great Frigatebird is larger than the male and lacks a gular pouch. In Vietnam, the Great Frigatebird can occasionally be seen flying over the ocean, particularly around the Con Dao islands.
