Tucked between the vast Tri An Reservoir and the Dong Nai River, Ma Đa Forest is Ho Chi Minh City’s closest slice of true lowland rainforest, two hours’ drive yet worlds apart. Tall dipterocarps and bamboo thickets echo with the scolding call of the Indochinese Green Magpie, while shaded gullies hide jewel-toned Bar-bellied Pittas and the metallic clack of Banded Kingfishers.

WANEE uses Ma Da as a wildlife “workshop”: dry-season bird-photography hides put pittas, broadbills and kingfishers at eye level, and warm wet nights (May–October) turn the leaf-litter into a herpetologist’s dream Rubeus Pit Vipers, king cobras and the Vietnam endemic Helen’s Flying Frog often headline our Scheduled Herping Tours. Families on Wild Harmony weekend breaks enjoy flat trails, sunset views over the river and a living history lesson at former jungle guerrilla sites.

Because forest access is capped and hides are ranger-managed, every visit funds anti-poaching patrols that keep Ma Da’s wildlife thriving. November to April offers bright, leech-free mornings for photography; early monsoon mists bring glowing fungi, calling frogs and macro magic. Whether you come for a day trip or link Ma Da to neighbouring Cat tien and Dalat on our longer circuits, the forest delivers big biodiversity without big travel.

  • Closest true rainforest to HCMC: breakfast in the city, lunch beside a pitta hide.

  • Hide network built for photographers: roofed, 4 m range, 06:30 golden-hour light.

  • Seasonal double bill: dry-season birding, wet-season herping; WANEE schedules both.

  • Night spotlighting on easy tracks: Rubeus Pit Viper, king cobra, civet and fireflies in one loop.

Perfect as a standalone Tailor Day Tour, or as the opening module of our Fixed-Date Bird Photography South Vietnam itinerary.
