Germain's Peacock Pheasant

Germain's Peacock-pheasant

Polyplectron germaini
The Germain's Peacock-pheasant is a shy and beautiful resident of the southern jungles. This rare bird lives only in Southern Vietnam and Eastern Cambodia, making it a top target for birdwatchers visiting Cat Tien National Park.
Status: Near Endemic
IUCN: Vulnerable
Diet: Omnivore
Group: bird
Size: 60 cm
Lifespan: 15 years
Sighting: Elusive
  • Size & Build: It is a medium-sized bird with a round body and a long tail. Males are about 56–60 cm long, while females are smaller at about 48 cm.
  • Key Marks: Its body is dark brownish-gray with tiny pale spots. The most famous feature is the row of sparkling blue or green eyespots on its wings and tail.
  • Face Details: It has bright red skin on its face that has no feathers. It also has a short beak and strong dark legs that often have multiple sharp points called "spurs".
  • Similar Species: It looks very much like the Gray Peacock-pheasant found in Northern Vietnam. However, the Germain's version has redder facial skin, darker feathers, and does not have a large white patch on its throat.
  • A Unique Specialty: This is a monotypic species, which means it has no other subspecies or versions. It is a one-of-a-kind bird found only in this specific region of the world.

  • Plumage Colors: Its dark brownish-gray feathers help it blend into the dead leaves on the forest floor. The shimmering eyespots only shine brightly when they catch a beam of sunlight or when the male opens his tail.
  • Male vs. Female: There is a big difference between the two. Males are larger and have very bright, colorful eyespots to attract mates. Females are smaller with duller colors, which helps them stay hidden while they take care of their young.
  • Soft Parts: They have a lead-gray beak and sturdy dark legs. The red skin around their eyes is one of their easiest features to spot.
  • Young Birds: Juveniles look like "faded" versions of the adults. They have brownish feathers and do not get their bright, shiny spots until they grow up.

This bird is a very loyal resident of the southern rainforests:

  • Geographic Range: It lives only in Southern Indochina, mainly in Southern Vietnam and Eastern Cambodia. The best place in the world to see them is Cat Tien National Park.
  • Elevation: They mostly live in lowlands but can be found in mountain forests up to 1,500 meters high.
  • Favorite Homes: They love thick, humid evergreen forests. They stay in areas with lots of bushes and bamboo where they can hide easily.
  • Resident Life: These birds are non-migratory, meaning they stay in the same small area all year long instead of flying away for the seasons.

The Germain's Peacock-pheasant has unique survival habits and a powerful voice:

  • Social Habits: They are extremely shy and secretive. They usually live alone or in pairs and would rather run into the bushes than fly away when they see someone.
  • Diet: They find food on the ground by scratching through the leaves. They eat insects like ants, beetles, and termites, as well as fallen forest fruits and seeds.
  • The Voice of the Jungle: You will often hear them before you see them. They make a low, purring sound that lasts a few seconds and sharp, metallic calls that echo through the quiet forest.
  • Nesting Secrets: Between March and May, the male performs a beautiful dance, fanning his tail to show off his green "eyes". The female builds a simple nest on the ground and usually lays only 1 or 2 eggs.
  • Conservation Status: They are currently listed as Near Threatened. This is because they are losing their forest homes and are sometimes caught in traps.
