The Siamese Fireback is a magnificent and iconic pheasant of the Indochinese lowland forests. As the national bird of Thailand, this species is a high-value target for wildlife enthusiasts in Vietnam, particularly in the dense evergreen jungles of Cat Tien National Park.

  • Size & Build: A big bird that mostly stays on the ground. Males are about 80 cm long, with a strong body built for walking through the forest.
  • Key Field Marks: It has a large, bright red face and bright red legs that are easy to see against the brown leaves on the ground.
  • Sexual Dimorphism: Males are grey with a "glowing" spot on their back, while females are warm brown with stripes to help them hide.
  • Special Feature: While it is the national bird of Thailand, it is also a true pride of Vietnam's biodiversity. Seeing this "fire-backed" king in Cat Tien National Park is a sign that you are in one of the best-protected forests in Southeast Asia.

  • Plumage Coloration: The male has a grey body and a tail with white stripes, while the back part near the tail looks reddish-brown.

  • Soft Parts: It has a light-colored beak and very bright red legs that stand out in the dark forest.

  • Juvenile/Immature Plumage: Young birds look like the brown females but are duller and smaller. Young males start getting their grey and red colors during their first year.

  • Molting: They have a full molt once a year. After this, their feathers look their best and brightest, ready for the next breeding season.
  • Geographic Range: They love thick, green forests where there are plenty of places to hide and find food

  • Elevation Range: You won't find them high up in the mountains; they prefer flat areas or low hills below 800m.

  • Habitat Specifics: This bird lives in the lowland forests of Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. In Vietnam, it is found from the north to the south, with Cat Tien National Park being its major stronghold.

  • Habitat Sensitivity: This bird is very good at staying hidden and will run away if it hears a loud noise or senses humans
