Gray-faced Tit-Babbler

Mixornis kelleyi
The Gray-faced Tit-Babbler is a lively and social resident of Vietnam’s lowland jungles. As a near-endemic specialty, it is one of the most important targets for birdwatchers visiting Cat Tien National Park. Known for its distinctive gray face and its constant, cheerful chatter, this small bird is a master of the forest undergrowth.
Status: Near Endemic
IUCN: Least Concern
Diet: Omnivore
Group:
Size: 18 cm
Lifespan: 8 years
Sighting: Fairly Common
  • Size & Build: It is a small, slender bird, measuring about 14–18 cm in length and weighing around 18 grams. It has a relatively long tail and a strong presence for its size.
  • Key Marks: Its most famous feature is the grayish face that contrasts sharply with its reddish-brown (rufous) crown and warm olive-brown back. It possesses a pale, slightly curved bill designed for picking up tiny insects.
  • A Unique Resident: This bird is a monotypic near-endemic, meaning there are no other versions of it, and it lives almost exclusively in Vietnam and small parts of neighboring countries.
  • Similar Species: It is closely related to the Pin-striped Tit-Babbler but can be easily distinguished by its plain gray face and lack of heavy stripes on the front.
  • Plumage Colors: Its head features a dull reddish-brown crown, while the face and sides of the neck are a pale gray. Its underparts are a soft, pale yellow with very thin dark streaks on the throat and breast.
  • Soft Parts: It has a pale, tapering bill and sturdy legs built for hopping through thick vegetation.
  • Male vs. Female: Both sexes look remarkably similar, though males might occasionally show slightly brighter feathers during the mating season.
  • Juveniles: Young birds have softer colors and browner faces that gradually turn gray as they grow into adults.

This bird is a very loyal resident of the lowland jungles:

  • Geographic Range: It is found primarily in Vietnam (Central and Southern regions), Laos, and Cambodia. It is a star resident of the southern lowland endemic bird area.
  • Elevation: They are typically found in lower forest layers at altitudes between 50 m and 1,150 m above sea level.
  • Favorite Homes: They thrive in moist lowland forests, bamboo thickets, and even in "secondary growth" forests that are recovering from past clearing. They love areas with a thick canopy and high humidity.
  • Sensitivity: Because they do not migrate and live in a specific type of forest, they are vulnerable to habitat loss. Seeing them is a good sign of a connected and healthy forest ecosystem.

  • Social Life: These birds are highly social and almost never alone. They move in active, noisy flocks that use continuous chatter to stay in touch while searching for food.
  • Diet: They are primarily insect-eaters, hunting for caterpillars, beetles, and other tiny bugs hidden in the leaf litter. They also enjoy forest fruits, berries, and flower nectar when they are in season.
  • The Power of Song: They are famous for their complex calls and "noisy" persistent songs that echo through the undergrowth.
  • Nesting Secrets: Loyal pairs work together to build cup-shaped nests near the ground. They use a mix of leaves, grass, and even spider webs to bind the nest together, keeping their 2 to 4 eggs safe.
  • Conservation Status: Currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, they remain a precious part of Vietnam's biodiversity that requires protected forests to survive.
