Halfway between Dalat’s cool pines and the coastal dunes of Phan Thiet, Deo Nui San – San Pass threads a ribbon of asphalt through misty bamboo-oak forest at 1.000 m above sea-level. Though only a ridgeline of road-reserve woodland, the pass has become legendary among birders: it is the most reliable spot on Earth for the raspy-voiced, Vietnam-near-endemic “Orange-breasted” Laughingthrush (Garrulax annamensis split pending).

Pre-dawn stops at the 178 km marker bring the forest alive with frogmouth hoots, then the laughingthrush pair bursts into song from moss-draped branches just metres off the tarmac. Scan the leaf-litter below and you may luck into a shy Blue Pitta crossing the ditch. Green Cochoa, Black-hooded & White-cheeked Laughingthrushes chatter higher in the canopy while Black-headed Parrotbills fossick noisy bamboo clumps.

WANEE slots San Pass into all Fixed-Date Bird Photography South-Vietnam circuits, sandwiched neatly between Cat Tien’s lowland pittas and Dalat plateau endemics, while soft-adventure families on Wild Harmony Jungle Drives enjoy an hour’s roadside stake-out here en-route to the beach. November to April offers dry, clear dawns; early wet-season mornings (May–July) give the highest pitta activity.

  • Roadside birding: no trekking, just step from vehicle to forest edge; perfect filler day between Di Linh town and Dalat.

  • Pitta jackpot: Blue often cross the drainage ditch after night rain or feeding hide during Nov to Apr

  • Photographer-friendly light: eastern aspect gives soft 06 : 30 side-light, bamboo backdrops and easy 400-600 mm range.

  • Quick combo stop: adds one dawn to Tailor Tours or Fixed-Date 10-Day Bird Photography.
