White-cheeked Laughingthrush

White-cheeked Laughingthrush

Pterorhinus vassali
The White-cheeked Laughingthrush is one of the most animated and vocal residents of the mountain forests in Southern Vietnam. A true socialite of the bird world, it is often found in large, noisy groups that fill the forest with cheerful, laughter-like calls. Easily recognized by its bold white cheek patches and dark "mask," this species is a specialty of the Da Lat Plateau.
Status: Near Endemic
IUCN: Least Concern
Diet: Omnivore

Size: 28 cm
Lifespan: 10 years
Sighting: Fairly Common
  • Size & Build: It is a medium-sized bird, standing about 23 to 28 cm tall and weighing between 64 and 76 grams. It has a sturdy build and a strong, slightly curved beak designed for foraging through forest debris.
  • Key Marks: Its most famous feature is the pair of striking white cheek patches that contrast sharply against its dark face and head. It looks alert and distinguished, with warm brown upperparts and a noticeably paler underside.
  • A Noisy Resident: Like its relatives, it is well-known for its loud and cheerful calls that sound like laughter, making it much easier to hear than to see in the thick bushes.
  • Unique Status: It is a monotypic species, meaning there are no other subspecies or variants. While it can be found in Laos and southern China, it is a core specialty of Vietnam's southern highlands.

  • Plumage Colors: Its body is covered in warm brown feathers on the back and wings, while its belly and chest are a softer, lighter shade. The sharp black "mask" around its eyes makes the white cheeks stand out even more vividly.
  • Soft Parts: It possesses a dark, robust beak and powerful legs that allow it to hop quickly across the forest floor and through dense shrubs.
  • Male vs. Female: Both adults look virtually identical in size and color, making them hard to tell apart in the field.
  • Juveniles: Young birds look like "softer" versions of the adults. Their colors are lighter and more muted, and those famous white cheek patches are not as bright until they grow older.

This bird is a loyal resident of Indochina’s misty mountain ranges:

  • Geographic Range: It is a resident species found primarily in Vietnam, Laos, and Southern China. In Vietnam, it is a star resident of the Da Lat Plateau and has been frequently recorded in Chu Yang Sin National Park.
  • Elevation: They prefer the mountain air, typically living at altitudes between 800 m and 2,000 m. They are often found at lower elevations than some other Dalat laughingthrushes, such as the Collared species.
  • Favorite Homes: Their favorite habitats are subtropical and tropical moist forests and areas with dense shrubs. They are also common in "secondary growth," which are areas where the forest is growing back.
  • Sensitive Specialists: While not currently considered endangered globally, they are sensitive to losing their forest homes to farming and logging. Their presence is a sign of a vibrant and connected mountain ecosystem.

The White-cheeked Laughingthrush is full of social energy and cooperative spirit:

  • Life in the Flock: These are highly social birds that love company. They travel in groups that can range from just a few members to large, lively flocks of over 30 individuals.
  • Omnivorous Diet: They eat a bit of everything! In the spring and summer, they hunt for insects and larvae like beetles and caterpillars. During the cooler autumn and winter months, they shift their diet to include more fruits, berries, and seeds.
  • The Power of Song: They are famous for their complex songs and synchronized vocal duets, where pairs or group members call out to each other in perfect harmony to defend their territory.
  • Nesting Secrets: They form loyal, monogamous pairs and build sturdy cup-shaped nests made of twigs, leaves, and moss. These nests are usually hidden low to the ground in dense bushes to keep their 2 to 4 eggs safe from predators.
