Collared Laughingthrush

Trochalopteron yersini
The Collared Laughingthrush is a spectacular and endangered endemic species, found strictly in the high-altitude forests of the Da Lat Plateau. Named in honor of the legendary Dr. Alexandre Yersin, this bird is a masterpiece of evolution, featuring a striking jet-black head, brilliant silvery-grey cheeks, and a vibrant orange-rufous collar.
Status: Endemic
IUCN: Endangered
Diet: insectivore
Group:
Size: 27 cm
Lifespan: 10 years
Sighting: Elusive

To spot a Collared Laughingthrush in the dense mountain bushes, look for these unique features:

  • Size & Build: It is a medium-sized, sturdy bird, about 26–28 cm long and weighing between 55 and 69 grams. It has a strong presence, typical of birds that live in the lower layers of high-altitude forest.
  • Key Marks: You cannot miss its jet-black head, which contrasts sharply with its silvery-grey cheeks. A beautiful orange-red collar wraps around its neck and stretches down to its chest, making it look very distinguished against the dark green leaves.
  • A Unique Resident: This is a "monotypic" species, which means it has no other versions or subspecies anywhere else in the world. Every bird you see in Dalat belongs to this one-of-a-kind family.
  • Similar Species: Thanks to its unique silver cheeks and bright orange collar, it is very easy to tell apart from any other laughingthrush in the region.

The Collared Laughingthrush is a masterpiece of forest colors:

  • Vibrant Plumage: Besides the black and silver on its head, the rest of its body is a warm rusty-brown. Its wings and tail have a golden-olive tint with black accents, which catch the light beautifully as the bird moves through the forest.
  • Dark Details: It has a short, straight black beak and strong, dark grey legs designed for hopping and searching for food on the damp forest floor.
  • Males, Females & Youth: Males and females look almost exactly the same. Young birds have similar patterns but their colors are duller, the orange collar is not as bright, and their feathers look a bit fluffier.
  • Yearly Refresh: Like others in its family, they go through a full molt (feather refresh) once a year to keep their "royal outfit" looking shiny and new for singing season.

This bird is a very loyal resident of the highest peaks:

  • Dalat Specialty: It lives in a very small area, found only on the Da Lat Plateau in Southern Vietnam. It is mostly seen on high mountains like Bidoup, Chu Yang Sin, and the Lang Bian range.
  • Cloud Forest Resident: They are specialists of the misty "cloud forests," usually staying at high altitudes between 1,500m and 2,400m above sea level. You will rarely find them in the lower valleys.
  • Old Growth Home: Their favorite houses are the dark, thick undergrowth of primary evergreen forests and dense patches of bamboo.
  • Sensitive Soul: Because it only lives on a few mountain tops, it is very sensitive to forest loss. Seeing one is a sign that you are in a truly healthy, ancient forest.

The Collared Laughingthrush has a social and musical personality:

  • Social Life: They are social birds, usually seen in devoted pairs or small family groups. While they can be shy and like to hide in thick bushes, they are very vocal and love to call out to each other.
  • Mixed Diet: They are omnivores, meaning they eat a bit of everything. They search the leaf litter for insects, spiders, and worms, but they also enjoy forest berries and seeds.
  • The Rising Whistle: Their song is a loud, high-pitched whistle that rises in tone, often heard as 'wueeeeooo'. Couples often perform "duets," where one bird whistles and the other answers with a haunting, cat-like call.
  • Breeding Secrets: They form loyal pairs and build cup-shaped nests made of twigs, moss, and leaves, hidden safely near the ground in dense vegetation.
  • Conservation: This bird is currently listed as Endangered or Vulnerable because its forest home is shrinking.
