Clouds pour over knife-edge ridges, dripping onto twisted oaks cloaked in orchids—that’s Ngoc Linh Nature Reserve, the highest stronghold of Vietnam’s Central Annamites and birthplace of legendary Panax vietnamensis ginseng. Between 1 400 m and 2.900 m elevation lives a bird set found nowhere else: the electric-blue-and-ochre Golden-winged Laughingthrush sings from mossy tangles, while bamboo thickets harbour the smartly banded Black-crowned Barwing and freshly split Indochinese Fulvetta.
Since a new asphalt road (Mang Ri Pass) opened in 2016, WANEE has woven Ngoc Linh into its 14–18-day Hardcore Birding & Photo circuits, dawn roadside stake-outs catch the laughingthrush at eye level, and afternoon ridge walks scan for Green-tailed Sunbird, Golden-breasted Fulvetta. Misty afternoons cool to 12 °C, perfect for steaming bowls of local bamboo-shoot soup back in Tu Mơ Rông. Herp enthusiasts on wet-season extensions seek the recently described Cyrtodactylus ngoclinhensis bent-toed gecko among dripping leaf-litter.
March–April gives crystal light and peak song; November–January brings crisp, dry paths and raptor passage.
