The Black-hooded Laughingthrush is one of the charismatic "masked" residents of Vietnam's southern mountains. This near-endemic bird is a favorite for nature lovers due to its bold jet-black head and its lively, social personality. Often found moving in noisy, energetic groups through the thick bamboo and evergreen forests of the Da Lat Plateau.

Size & Build: It is a medium-sized bird, measuring about 24–30 cm in length and weighing between 60 and 64 grams. It has a sturdy build and a moderately long tail.
Key Marks: The most striking feature is its solid black "hood" that completely covers its head and throat. It also has very distinctive white crescents or eye-rings above and below its eyes, making it look very alert.
The "Laughing" Bird: Like its relatives, it is famous for its loud, laughing-like calls that echo through the forest.
Unique Status: It is a near-endemic species, meaning it is found almost exclusively in Vietnam and a small part of neighboring Laos.
Plumage Colors: Its body is mostly a dark slaty-grey or olive-brown. A beautiful highlight of rich orange-brown (rufous) can be seen on its sides (flanks), contrasting with a slightly paler belly.
Soft Parts: It has a strong, straight black beak and powerful dark legs built for hopping through thick undergrowth.

Juveniles: Young birds are duller and less defined. Their hoods are dark brown instead of deep black, and their white eye-rings are not as prominent.
