[7-Day] Vietnam Primate Watching & Photography – Hanoi to Da Nang

A seven-day specialist journey from Hanoi to Da Nang, focused on three of Vietnam’s distinctive primates across limestone wetlands, karst forest and the coastal forests of Son Tra.
Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park
Private
Easy–moderate field pace

Why This Route Works

Three primates, three very different landscapes

The journey links Delacour’s Langur at Van Long, Hatinh Langur around Phong Nha and Red-shanked Douc at Son Tra, with enough time for repeat sessions rather than one quick visit at each site.

Best for

Primate enthusiasts, wildlife photographers and naturalists who want a focused one-week route combining rare langurs with landscapes, birds and other forest wildlife.

Keep in mind

Primate activity is unpredictable. Expect early starts, patient observation and route changes based on weather, access and recent ranger information.

What We’ll Be Looking For

Primate highlights

Limestone-cliff langurs at Van Long, karst-forest primates in Phong Nha and repeated Red-shanked Douc sessions at Son Tra form the backbone of the journey.
The three signature primates are priority targets, not guaranteed sightings.
Species_profile—The male Delacour's langur with the upper body is black, a sharp demarcation to white from just above the hips to just above the knees
Strong focus
Delacour’s Langur
Trachypithecus delacouri
A highly localised limestone langur and the signature Van Long target. Vân Long supports the largest known population of this Critically Endangered Vietnam endemic.
Species_profile—Hatinh's Langur, one of the endangered and endemic primates found in Viet Nam.
Strong focus
Hatinh Langur
Trachypithecus hatinhensis
A specialised limestone primate at the heart of the Phong Nha section. Phong Nha–Kẻ Bàng lists Hatinh Langur among its globally threatened primates and describes it as narrowly associated with the region’s limestone landscape.
Itinerary - The Red-shanked Douc is delightfully enjoying figs, captured during the Vietnam Wildlife Watching Tours.
Strong focus
Red-shanked Douc
Pygathrix nemaeus
A colourful canopy primate and the signature wildlife subject at Son Tra. Sơn Trà supports an important wild population of the species.

Journey Itinerary

Seven days through Vietnam’s primate landscapes

The route moves from northern limestone wetlands through the karst forests of Phong Nha and the Annamites before finishing with coastal-forest primates at Son Tra.
7 Days / 6 Nights
Hanoi → Van Long → Phong Nha-Ke Bang → Bach Ma → Da Nang / Son Tra
Limestone wetlands & karst cliffs Tropical karst forest Annamite montane forest Coastal evergreen forest field pace
Day 1–2 — Van Long
Delacour’s Langur & limestone wetlands
Sampan sessions · karst cliffs · repeated langur watches · wetland birds
Leave Hanoi for Van Long and begin with a late-afternoon sampan session below the limestone cliffs. A full second day provides both dawn and dusk opportunities for Delacour’s Langurs, with wetland birding and quieter observation between the main primate windows.
Overnight
Van Long / Ninh Binh
Day 3–4 — Phong Nha-Ke Bang
Hatinh Langur & karst forest
Long transfer · limestone forest · Hatinh Langur · repeat vigils
Travel south to Phong Nha and enter a much larger tropical karst landscape. Spend the following full day working selected valleys and forest sections for Hatinh Langur, while remaining open to other primates, birds and forest wildlife encountered along the route.
Overnight
Phong Nha
Day 5–6 — Phong Nha → Bach Ma → Da Nang
Annamite forest transition
Ho Chi Minh West Road · montane forest · wildlife & birds · coastal transfer
Continue south along the western Annamites toward Bach Ma, using available forest time for birds and supporting wildlife rather than forcing another primate target. The following morning adds a final ridge or forest session before continuing to Da Nang and introducing Son Tra.
Overnight
Bach Ma · Da Nang
Day 7 — Son Tra Peninsula
Red-shanked Douc finale
Dawn doucs · canopy photography · coastal forest · departure
Begin before sunrise on Son Tra, allowing the morning to follow Red-shanked Douc activity through the canopy rather than rushing through multiple sites. After the final field session, return to Da Nang for onward flights or a Hoi An extension.
Finish
Da Nang
The main destinations remain stable, but exact observation sites and session timing may change with weather, trail access, wildlife movement and current ranger information.
