Spread along the sun-baked banks of the Srepok River, Yok Don National Park protects the largest block of dry dipterocarp woodland left in Indochina, habitat more typical of northern Thailand than lush Vietnam. Towering, fire-adapted teak relatives cast dappled shade where herds of banteng once roamed and today hide White-rumped Falcons, Black-headed Woodpeckers and Rufous-winged Buzzards that soar on midday thermals.

WANEE features Yok Don as the “savanna chapter” in its Fixed-Date Bird Photography South & Central Tours: dawn jeep drives stop beside open glades alive with green peafowl, while afternoon Srepok boat drifts bring Mekong Wagtails and river terns at eye-level. Ethical elephant experiences run by the park let you shadow retired logging elephants, no saddles, just quiet observation of their dust baths and bamboo browsing.

The dry season (December-April) offers blue skies, leaf-less crowns and kilometre-wide views for raptors; first monsoon storms paint the woodland emerald and trigger spectacular butterfly swarms. With new eco-lodges at Ban Don village, sealed highway access from Buon Ma Thuot airport and WANEE’s community-guide scheme, Yokdon now pairs effortlessly with Cat Tien lowland rainforest and Dalat highland endemics for a complete southern Vietnam wildlife arc.

  • Unique biome: Vietnam’s only true dry dipterocarp forest; bird species you won’t meet in Dalat or Cat Tien.

  • Raptor & woodpecker paradise: open canopy means clear flight shots; signature stop on WANEE’s photo tours.

  • Ethical elephant encounter: walk beside, not on, former timber elephants; fees fund vet care and mahout salaries.

  • Srepok River wildlife cruise: Mekong Wagtail, River Tern and sunset kingfishers without hiking.

  • Cultural mix: Ban don’s Ê-Đê long-house craft, wild honey tasting and traditional gongs break up field sessions.
