Sheer limestone towers rise from mirror-still marsh, their reflections broken only by ripples of paddled sampans—this is Van Long Nature Reserve, the largest inland wetland in the Red River Delta and last stronghold of the critically endangered Delacour’s Langur. Fewer than 300 of these black-and-white “pants monkeys” survive worldwide; roughly 180 cling to the grey cliffs that ring Van Long, making dawn and dusk boat trips almost guaranteed encounters.
Just two hours south of Hanoi, the reserve compresses bird-rich reedbeds, lotus lagoons and cathedral-high karst into an easy half-day escape that WANEE slots into both Tailor Birding & Primate Short-Breaks and relaxed Wild Harmony Family Weekends. Photograph langurs as golden light hits the cliffs, then drift past roosting flocks of Cotton Pygmy-Goose, Asian Openbills and wintering Northern Pintail. Filmmakers chose the reserve as the Skull Island backdrop for Kong, one look at the brooding peaks explains why.
October–April brings dry blue skies and highest langur activity; summer rains carpet the stone in emerald vines and fill the marsh with crimson lotus bloom.
Delacour’s Langur capital: world-best site; often seen at eye level from non-motor sampans.
Bird-rich wetland: Cotton Pygmy-Goose, White-browed Crake, Pheasant-tailed Jacana and winter ducks on a two-hour circuit.
No trekking required: flat dyke road, quiet paddled boats—ideal for children, photographers and seniors on Wild Harmony breaks.
Karst panorama photos: silvery cliffs mirrored in glassy water at sunrise & sunset; drone-free yet cinematic.
Weekend add-on: pairs perfectly with nearby Trang An caves or Cuc Phuong forest on WANEE’s 3- to 5-day northern nature loops.
