Towering 400-metre cliffs, jungle‐draped dolines and the planet’s largest river cave: Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park feels like a lost world carved from pure limestone. More than 300 grottos tunnel through the massif, among them mind, bending Sơn Đoòng and the chandelier-studded Paradise Cave, yet step outside the entrances and you’re in prime wildlife habitat where the near-endemic Sooty Babbler and Limestone Leaf-warbler sing above the emerald canopy and critically endangered Hatinh Langurs cling to vertical crags.

WANEE weaves Phong Nha into its northbound Birding & Wildlife Photography routes: dawn boat rides up the Son River locate babblers on karst buttresses, while afternoon jungle treks to Tra Ang sinkhole scan for Sultan Tit and limestone reptiles. Wild Harmony families paddle illuminated kayaks inside Phong Nha Cave, then cool off in turquoise springs beneath towering kapok trees. Cultural breaks include a sobering visit to wartime Khe Gat airstrip or a farm lunch of peanut-leaf salad and bamboo-shoot soup.

Dry season (February–August) guarantees cave access and crystal rivers; December–April brings cooler mornings ideal for birding and langur spotting. Entry fees fund Vietnam’s largest anti-snare brigade, so every visit helps keep this subterranean wonderland alive.

  • World-class cave scenery: Paradise Cave’s 31 km chamber, Dark Cave zip-line and phosphorescent mud baths.

  • Karst-specialist birds: Sooty Babbler, Limestone Leaf-warbler, Blyth’s Kingfisher, targeted on WANEE limestone loops.

  • Rare primates: up-to-80 Hatinh Langurs on dawn cliff faces viewed from Son River long-tail boat.

  • Soft to hardcore: choose a gentle boardwalk tour or a two-day underground river trek; both start 45 min from Dong Hoi airport.

  • Culture & conflict history: secret wartime cave hospitals, Truong Son martyr temples and fresh peanut farms connect nature with local life.
