Red-vented Barbet

Psilopogon lagrandieri
The Red-vented Barbet is a colorful and distinctive resident of the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. Known for its emerald-green plumage and a signature splash of scarlet under its tail, this bird is a vital architect of the forest ecosystem. Often heard before it is seen, its low, resonant calls are a familiar sound in the lowland and montane forests of Vietnam.
Status: Near Endemic
IUCN: Least Concern
Diet: Omnivore
Group: bird
Size: 28 cm
Lifespan: years
Sighting: Occasional
  • Size & Build: It is a relatively large barbet, measuring between 24 and 34 cm in length and weighing approximately 68 to 75 grams. It has the characteristically stocky body and powerful bill of the Asian barbet family.
  • Key Field Marks: The most definitive feature is the scarlet-red patch located on the undertail-coverts (the vent), which stands out sharply against its otherwise green body.
  • Facial Details: It features a vivid blue forehead and crown and a dark brown head with subtle white eye patches. Look for the bristly tufts at the base of its large, dark beak.
  • Regional Variants: There are two recognized subspecies in the region: the nominate lagrandieri (found in the south) and rothschildi (found in the north and Annam), which is generally darker with less red on the vent.
  • Similar Species: While similar to other green barbets, it is easily distinguished by its larger size and the unique combination of a blue crown and red vent.

  • Emerald Plumage: Its body is primarily a bright, lush green, which provides excellent cover among the leaves of the high canopy.
  • Head Contrast: The dark brown head and blue crown create a striking contrast, often appearing as a dark "hood" when the bird is seen from a distance.
  • The "Vent" Accent: The scarlet-red patch beneath the tail is often hidden while the bird is perched but becomes a brilliant flash of color when it flies or shifts its position.
  • Male vs. Female: Both sexes look nearly identical (minimal sexual dimorphism), though males may be slightly more vocal during the breeding season.
  • Juveniles: Young birds exhibit duller plumage and a less prominent red patch compared to adults.

This species is a loyal and specialized resident of Southeast Asia’s green corridors:

  • Geographic Range: It is a resident species found across Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Eastern Thailand.
  • Local Strongholds: In Vietnam, it is a high-priority target in Cat Tien National Park and has been recorded in the Chu Yang Sin Nature Reserve.
  • Elevation: They inhabit a wide range of altitudes, from lowland forests up to forested ridges and slopes at 2,100 meters above sea level.
  • Favorite Homes: They thrive in dense tropical lowland and evergreen forests, often gathering at large fruiting trees.
  • Resident Status: These are non-migratory birds that remain within their home range year-round.

The Red-vented Barbet plays a critical role in the health of the rainforest:

  • Frugivorous Diet: They are primarily fruit-eaters, consuming large quantities of figs, berries, and other tropical forest fruits. They also supplement their diet with flower nectar and insects like beetles and caterpillars.
  • The Forest Voice: They produce low-pitched, hollow calls like "kyaa," "kyow," or "yow," often repeated at a rate of 30–75 notes per minute for several minutes.
  • Tree Cavity Nesters: Monogamous pairs work together to excavate nesting holes in decaying wood within tree cavities.
  • Nesting Secrets: Females typically lay 2 to 4 eggs. Both parents share the duties of incubating the eggs (about 14 days) and feeding the chicks until they fledge at approximately three weeks of age.
  • Conservation Status: Currently listed as Least Concern (IUCN), they still face threats from habitat loss and fragmentation caused by logging and agricultural expansion.
