This is now THE site to see the endemic Golden-winged Laughingthush, as well as the Indochinese Fulvetta, and Black-crowned Barwing. Here, at the forest edge, we have a great chance of finding this recently-described species and others, and looking for the Brown Hornbill, Indochinese Wren-Babbler (formerly known as Short-tailed Scimitar-Babbler), White-winged Magpie, Red-tailed Laughingthrush, Himalayan Cutia, Green Shrike-babbler and a chance for Yellow-billed Nuthatch.  Day 09 (B, L, D): NL - Mang Den (MD) This early morning we will drive for about 2 hours on poor roads to Mang Ri searching for our main targets. Our efforts should be rewarded, however, as this is the home of the spectacular endemic Collared Laughing-Thrush, as well as Yellow-billed Nuthatch and the Vietnamese forms of Cutia, Rufous-winged (Black-crowned) Fulvetta and Black-throated (Grey-crowned) Tit which are sure-fire bets for splitting before too long. The elusive and handsome Green Cochoa is also here and should be vocal at this time of year; a number of other Asian and wintering birds will also be encountered. Nearer to Da Lat itself is Ta Nung Valley, famous for the relatively recently re-discovered Grey-crowned Crocias which are regularly encountered here. Other endemics such as Black-hooded and Orange-breasted Laughingthrushes and Vietnamese Greenfinch are also possible. Day 15 (B, L, D): Da Lat - Di Linh (San Pass) We leave Da Lat for the relatively short drive to Di Linh. Certain birds can be easier to locate here at the Nui San Pass than in Da Lat, including Blue and Rusty-naped Pittas, Spotted Forktail, White-cheeked, Black-hooded, and Orange-breasted Laughing-Thrushes, Vietnamese Cutia, and “Black-headed” Parrotbill, a probable split from the more widespread Grey-headed Parrotbill. Overnight at Da Lat city (1 Night)  Day 16 (B, L, D): Di Linh  - Cat Tien (CT) After an early morning return to the Nui San pass (which will give us our first chance for the elusive Green Cochoa), we will drive Down to the Cat Tien National Park for birding in the afternoon. Overnight at Cat Tien National Park (2 Nights)  Day 17 (B, L, D): Full-day birding in Cat Tien Np. The premier National Park in South Vietnam, Cat Tien is located in Cochinchina in the Da Lat foothills and boasts an impressive mosaic of forest and seasonal wetlands which largely escaped the defoliants used in the Vietnam War. We will bird using jeep tracks and forest trails to seek out the endemic Germain’s Peackock-Pheasant, other spectacular birds such as Siamese Fireback, Green Peafowl and Scaly-breasted Partridge, endemic Pittas, the endemic Grey-faced Tit-Babbler and a host of other species also known from Malaysia and Thailand. Cat Ba Langur Watching Tour - A Commitment to Nature

Please email us for more details as this tour is specially designed for those with a strong commitment to nature and conservation.

Why Cat Ba Langur Watching tour is Special

The Cat Ba langur (Trachypithecus poliocephalus) is a critically endangered primate listed among "The World's 25 Most Endangered Primates." Sadly, its population has declined by a staggering 80% over the past three generations. Today, there are fewer than 70 of these langurs left in the world.
In response to this crisis, the Cat Ba Langur Conservation Project was initiated in November 2000 by Münster Zoo and ZSCSP (Zoological Society for the Conservation of Species and Populations). Despite being declared a National Park in 1986, the langur's distribution range continued to witness poaching and population decline. As of 2006, around 30% of the population existed outside the National Park.
The conservation efforts saw significant measures being taken. Cat Ba National Park was expanded to encompass the entire Cat Ba langur population, and Special Protection Zones were established to provide the most stringent protection available under Vietnamese law.
A strictly protected sanctuary, located on the eastern coast of Cat Ba Island within the National Park, now supports approximately 40% of the remaining population. This area is rigorously monitored, with fixed boundaries, prohibition signs, increased ranger presence, and vigilant control over caves and hunter trails.
By the end of 2001, poaching of the Cat Ba Langur had ceased. Since the commencement of conservation efforts, nine langurs have been born, and only three have succumbed to natural causes. Today, the greatest hope for the Cat Ba Langur's survival lies in the conservation of its limestone habitats.

Itinerary of [1 Day] Herping Tour near Ho Chi Minh City - Ma Da, Dong Nai NR

There are NO restaurants on this park, so it's better to bring some snacks with you. We'll prepare lunch and dinner. After spending all our time herping, we'll return to Ho Chi Minh City at midnight.

Extra Information about this Location

This tour start from Ho Chi Minh City, and Ma Da lies about 2 hours drive Northwest of Ho Chi Minh City. The area can be tricky to reach by public transport, so we recommend that we pick you up at Ho Chi Minh and then drive there.
The place is open year-round, and our herping tours can take off every day of the year as long as our guide is available. The wet season is probably the most consistent when it comes to producing good results, roughly from May to October, and much of November still benefits from the wet period before. December - January can be successful, but there is also the chance of periods with cold nights that significantly slow down the movement of species.
Ma Da Nature Reserve is home to a variety of amphibians and reptiles. Over 20 species of frogs have been recorded in the reserve, including the banded bullfrog, Asian common toad, and Vietnamese tree frog. There are also over 70 species of reptiles, including snakes like the Siamese spitting cobra, king cobra, and Malayan pit viper, as well as lizards such as the green crest-tailed lizard, bloodsucker gecko, and many more.
FOR THIS LOCATION WE CAN DO HERPING ALL YEAR ROUND, BUT RAINING SEASON IS GOOD FOR AMPHIBIANS.

Find out about [7-Day Expedition] Discovering Vietnam's Herpetofauna: Exploring the Biodiversity of Cat Tien National Park and the Dalat Plateau. Cat Tien National Park and Dalat Plateau are among the best spots for herping tours due to their rich biodiversity and unique ecosystems. The parks are home to a diverse range of reptiles and amphibians, including many rare and endemic species.
Cat Tien National Park is located in the lowland rainforest of Southern Vietnam, while the Dalat Plateau is situated in the highlands of the central region. Both regions offer a variety of habitats, from wetlands and rivers to dense forests and grasslands, making them ideal for a wide range of herping experiences. Whether you are an experienced herpetologist or a novice enthusiast, these two destinations offer an unforgettable opportunity to explore and discover the fascinating world of reptiles and amphibians.

What is the best time for herping in Cat Tien and Dalat Plateau?

The best time for herping in Cat Tien National Park and Dalat Plateau is during the rainy season, which typically runs from May to October. During this time, the weather is warm and humid, providing ideal conditions for amphibians and reptiles to be active and visible. Additionally, the increased rainfall during this time leads to more vegetation growth, which in turn attracts more insects and other prey species for the herps to feed on. It's important to note that while the rainy season is the best time for herping, it's also the time of year when the trails and roads in these areas can be more difficult to navigate due to the wet conditions.

Vietnam Primates Watching Tour: A Journey Beyond the Ordinary

Vietnam, a country renowned for its rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes, has yet another treasure hidden within its dense forests and misty mountains - its diverse and unique primate species. For those with a penchant for wildlife and a thirst for adventure, our meticulously crafted 14-day Vietnam Primates Watching Tour offers an unparalleled opportunity to delve deep into the heart of Vietnam's primate kingdom.

The Primate Spotlight

Primates, often considered our closest relatives in the animal kingdom, have always fascinated humans. Their complex behaviors, expressive faces, and intricate social structures offer a mirror to our own evolutionary past. Vietnam, in particular, is a hotspot for primate diversity, with several species that are found nowhere else on Earth. This tour is designed to shine a spotlight on these incredible creatures, offering travelers a chance to observe them in their natural habitats, understand their behaviors, and learn about the conservation efforts in place to protect them.
The Golden-headed Langur of Cat Ba, with its striking appearance and critically endangered status, is one of the many highlights of this journey. Found only on Cat Ba Island, these langurs are a testament to the unique evolutionary paths that isolated populations can take. Observing them in the wild, with their golden manes glowing in the sun, is a sight that stays with you long after the journey ends.
The Delacour's Langur, with its distinctive "white pants", offers another unforgettable wildlife experience. Found only in the north-central part of Vietnam, these langurs are a symbol of the country's rich biodiversity. Their playful antics and curious nature make them a favorite among travelers and wildlife enthusiasts alike.
But the primate wonders don't end there. The Red Shanked Douc, with its vibrant colors and graceful movements, is often referred to as the "queen of primates". The dense forests of PNKB National Park and Da Nang provide the perfect backdrop to observe these stunning creatures. The park is also home to several other primate species, including the Ha Tinh Langur, various species of Macaques, and the elusive Slow Loris.

While primates are the main focus of this tour, the journey offers so much more. The landscapes of Vietnam, from the limestone cliffs of Van Long Nature Reserve to the coastal beauty of Da Nang and the highland charm of Da Lat, provide a constantly changing backdrop to this adventure. Each destination has been carefully selected not just for its primate populations, but also for its natural beauty, cultural significance, and the unique experiences it offers.
Travelers will have the opportunity to interact with local communities, understand their way of life, and learn about the intricate balance between humans and wildlife. Workshops on primate photography, cultural performances, traditional storytelling sessions, and interactions with conservationists add depth to the journey, making it a holistic experience.

Conservation at the Core

At the heart of this tour is a strong emphasis on conservation. With several of Vietnam's primate species facing threats from habitat loss, hunting, and climate change, there's an urgent need for conservation efforts. This tour aims to raise awareness about these challenges and highlight the efforts being made to address them. A portion of the tour's proceeds goes directly to local conservation initiatives, ensuring that travelers are directly contributing to the protection of the species they come to see.

When is the best-time for this tour and why?

The optimal time for Vietnam's Primate Watching Tour is the dry season, spanning from November to April. This period promises cooler temperatures, minimal rainfall, and clearer skies, ensuring comfortable treks and unhindered access to national parks. Moreover, primates, such as the Golden-headed Langur, are notably more active during these months, enhancing daytime sighting opportunities. The drier conditions also mean fewer mosquitoes, reducing the risk of insect-borne diseases. Additionally, this timeframe coincides with several Vietnamese cultural festivals, offering travelers a chance to immerse themselves in local traditions. While Vietnam's biodiversity ensures a rewarding experience throughout the year, the dry season, especially from November to April, is particularly favorable for primate enthusiasts.
