Bird fauna – Birding

While dominant habitat type at Can Gio, plantation mangrove, is of relatively low importance for key bird species, the intertidal mudflats and sandbanks at the site are important habitats for migratory waterbirds. Several rare waterbird species have been recorded at the site, including Spotted Greenshank, Asian Dowitcher, Spot-billed Pelican and Painted Stork. In addition, the globally endangered Black-faced Spoonbill has been recorded at the site, although it is not believed to regularly occur in significant numbers.

Mammals

There are 14 species of mammals recorded in Can Gio Biosphere Reserve with 2 species of otters that are typical of the area, Eurasian Otter and Asian Small-clawed Otter with the world’s largest bat Greater Asiatic Yellow Bat, precious Sunda Pangolin species the rarest in Vietnam, and the intelligent aquatic mammal of the Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphin

There are now 14 species of amphibians and 35 reptiles with outstanding species such as Saltwater Crocodile, Olive Ridley Sea turtle, Green Sea Turtle, White-lipped Pit Viper, Spine-bellied Sea Snake, King Cobra, Indian Cobra, Banded Krait, Indian Python, Red-tailed Pipe Snake, Common Water Monitor, Common Butterfly Lizard, etc.
