Itinerary of [1 Day] Herping Tour near Ho Chi Minh City - Ma Da, Dong Nai NR
Day 1 (9:00 to ± midnight):
We don't have a standard itinerary since it depends on various factors, such as how many days you book and if there are any specific species you'd like to see. We'll adapt the trip to increase our chances. Our herping guide will try their best to get the most out of your trip based on your preferences.
We use a car to move around throughout the park, visit different habitats and our favorite hotspots, and search for herps on foot. It tends to be more successful to intensively search several spots rather than hiking long distances on a single long trail. Please notify us in advance about specific target species/preferences during the correspondence prior to booking the tour.
There are NO restaurants on this park, so it's better to bring some snacks with you. We'll prepare lunch and dinner. After spending all our time herping, we'll return to Ho Chi Minh City at midnight.
Extra Information about this Location

Find out about [7-Day Expedition] Discovering Vietnam's Herpetofauna: Exploring the Biodiversity of Cat Tien National Park and the Dalat Plateau. Cat Tien National Park and Dalat Plateau are among the best spots for herping tours due to their rich biodiversity and unique ecosystems. The parks are home to a diverse range of reptiles and amphibians, including many rare and endemic species. Cat Tien National Park is located in the lowland rainforest of southern Vietnam, while the Dalat Plateau is situated in the highlands of the central region. Both regions offer a variety of habitats, from wetlands and rivers to dense forests and grasslands, making them ideal for a wide range of herping experiences. Whether you are an experienced herpetologist or a novice enthusiast, these two destinations offer an unforgettable opportunity to explore and discover the fascinating world of reptiles and amphibians. What is the best time for herping in Cat Tien and Dalat Plateau? The best time for herping in Cat Tien National Park and Dalat Plateau is during the rainy season, which typically runs from May to October. During this time, the weather is warm and humid, providing ideal conditions for amphibians and reptiles to be active and visible. Additionally, the increased rainfall during this time leads to more vegetation growth, which in turn attracts more insects and other prey species for the herps to feed on. It's important to note that while the rainy season is the best time for herping, it's also the time of year when the trails and roads in these areas can be more difficult to navigate due to the wet conditions. Why our [7-Day Expedition] Discovering Vietnam's Herpetofauna?

Our [7-Day Expedition] Discovering Vietnam's Herpetofauna is an ideal opportunity for those who want to witness the diverse and unique herpetofauna of Vietnam. During our expedition, we will visit various locations, each with its own unique and diverse herpetofauna. Next, we will travel to Ma Da Nature Reserve which is renowned for its rich biodiversity, including numerous endemic species of reptiles and amphibians. Here, we will embark on a herping expedition to observe various reptiles and amphibians, including some of the rarest and most sought-after species. The tour will then take us to the well-known Cat Tien National Park, which is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including reptiles and amphibians. We will explore the lush forests, streams, and wetlands to observe the region's unique and fascinating herpetofauna. Afterward, we will visit the Di Linh - San pass, an area that is not only famous for its stunning views but also for its rich diversity of reptiles and amphibians. On the way birding in Khau Pha pass Overnight at Mu cang Chai Town (3 Nights) Day 05 (B, L, D): MCC Full-day birding around Mu Cang Chai Town Day 06 (B, L, D): MCC Full-day birding around Mu Cang Chai Town Day 07 (B, L, D): MCC – Hanoi (270 km) - Flight to Pleiku - Ngoc Linh (From MCC to HN 6 hours drive; need at least 4 hours in airport, 2.5 hours drive from Pleiku airport to Tumrong) - LONG DAY OF TRAVEL Another option: If we have time, it's better from Hanoi, to take a flight to Da Nang and have one extra night there and early morning birding and Monkey before taking a drive to TuMrong (Ngoc Linh) (this will be 1 night at Da Nang City, 1 Night at Tumrong Town) Overnight at Tumorong Town  (2 Nights) Day 08 (B, L, D): Ngoc Linh - Full-day birding in Mang Ri Mang Ri pass, a new road crossing the Ngoc Linh Natural Reserve, was completed in May 2016. This is now THE site to see the endemic Golden-winged Laughingthush, as well as the Indochinese Fulvetta, and Black-crowned Barwing. Here, at the forest edge, we have a great chance of finding this recently-described species and others, and looking for the Brown Hornbill, Indochinese Wren-Babbler (formerly known as Short-tailed Scimitar-Babbler), White-winged Magpie, Red-tailed Laughingthrush, Himalayan Cutia, Green Shrike-babbler and a chance for Yellow-billed Nuthatch.  Day 09 (B, L, D): NL - Mang Den (MD) This early morning we will drive for about 2 hours on poor roads to Mang Ri searching for our main targets. Later we drive to Mang Den for the afternoon birding Overnight at Mang Den Town (2 Nights)  Day 10 (B, L, D): Mang Den – Birding in Mang Canh Forest Our main target for a full day of birding at Mang Canh is the Chestnut-eared Laughingthrush, but we will also be on the lookout for Black-hooded Laughingthrush, Pale-capped Pigeon, the endemic Ratchet-tailed Treepie and we have another chance for Yellow-billed Nuthatch, as well as our first chance to see the Brown Hornbill. Our efforts should be rewarded, however, as this is the home of the spectacular endemic Collared Laughing-Thrush, as well as Yellow-billed Nuthatch and the Vietnamese forms of Cutia, Rufous-winged (Black-crowned) Fulvetta and Black-throated (Grey-crowned) Tit which are sure-fire bets for splitting before too long. The elusive and handsome Green Cochoa is also here and should be vocal at this time of year; a number of other Asian and wintering birds will also be encountered. Nearer to Da Lat itself is Ta Nung Valley, famous for the relatively recently re-discovered Grey-crowned Crocias which are regularly encountered here. Other endemics such as Black-hooded and Orange-breasted Laughingthrushes and Vietnamese Greenfinch are also possible. Day 15 (B, L, D): Da Lat - Di Linh (San Pass) We leave Da Lat for the relatively short drive to Di Linh. Certain birds can be easier to locate here at the Nui San Pass than in Da Lat, including Blue and Rusty-naped Pittas, Spotted Forktail, White-cheeked, Black-hooded, and Orange-breasted Laughing-Thrushes, Vietnamese Cutia, and “Black-headed” Parrotbill, a probable split from the more widespread Grey-headed Parrotbill. Overnight at Da Lat city (1 Night)  Day 16 (B, L, D): Di Linh  - Cat Tien (CT) After an early morning return to the Nui San pass (which will give us our first chance for the elusive Green Cochoa), we will drive Down to the Cat Tien National Park for birding in the afternoon. Overnight at Cat Tien National Park (2 Nights)  Day 17 (B, L, D): Full-day birding in Cat Tien Np. The premier National Park in South Vietnam, Cat Tien is located in Cochinchina in the Da Lat foothills and boasts an impressive mosaic of forest and seasonal wetlands which largely escaped the defoliants used in the Vietnam War. We will bird using jeep tracks and forest trails to seek out the endemic Germain’s Peackock-Pheasant, other spectacular birds such as Siamese Fireback, Green Peafowl and Scaly-breasted Partridge, endemic Pittas, the endemic Grey-faced Tit-Babbler and a host of other species also known from Malaysia and Thailand.
