The South Central Coast region of Vietnam is known for its stunning coastline, lush forests, and unique geography, making it an exceptional destination for birdwatching. The area includes a range of habitats from lowland evergreen forests to montane forests, wetlands, and coastal mudflats, each supporting an array of bird species. The region’s diverse habitats and topography make it an excellent location to observe birds that are not commonly found in other parts of the country.
The lowland evergreen forest is one of the most critical forest types in the region, with a high diversity of broadleaf tree species and rich bird communities. Birdwatchers can spot species such as cuckoos, hornbills, barbets, woodpeckers, and flowerpeckers in this habitat. Additionally, semi-evergreen, or mixed deciduous forest, is also present and is rich in bird diversity, including nuthatches, thrushes, and flycatchers.
At higher elevations, the montane evergreen forests provide a home for many endemic and near-endemic species, including many babblers and laughingthrushes. The forests are dominated by oaks, chestnuts, beeches, laurels, and conifers, with two distinct types recognized: lower montane and upper montane evergreen forest. Above 1700 m, the transition to upper montane evergreen forest occurs, with rhododendrons becoming the dominant tree species.
The South Central Coast region is also rich in wetlands, including coastal mudflats and lagoons, which provide vital habitats for many migratory bird species. Birdwatchers can spot migratory shorebirds such as plovers, sandpipers, and stints, as well as waterbirds like herons, egrets, and ducks.
